I was originally going to order a bunk bed with a 10" mattress for my son but actually a 6" mattress is just the right size for a bunk bed. My son and I put a mattress on his bed and waited 3 days for it to be completely used. After the first night's sleep he liked it, and the second night he said he slept exactly 9 hours. He had never slept so well. He is now 18 years old and online in his freshman year of college.
