I have a standard manual toothbrush and it works great. I've been using it for over a month now. For about the first week or two I definitely noticed the smell of the sanitizing pad that is in the Steripod. Concerned, I spoke to someone who works for the company and they told me that the basic chemistry of this sanitizing pad is the same as Listerine. This eased my anxiety and I have continued to use it with no problems. After a few weeks the chemical smell went away. I'll just use the same Steripod because I don't care if it has a sterilizing effect. I just love using the cover.
