UV filtering in planted aquariums is HUGE, it's not required but has a significant impact on keeping the water clear much longer between water changes and filter cleaning . Normally the light is in some kind of canister and is surrounded by the water as the exposure to light is very harmful to your fish and even your plants. So this light will only work if you have a swamp or a safe hidden location (like really hidden where fish can't get in) in your aquarium. In my case I placed two of these in my 90 gallon overflow box that is not visible to the fish and does not shine on the plants. I run it 12 hours at night when no one is looking at the tank. It does a fantastic job of keeping floating algaecide particles dead and trapped in the filter. If you have a place to put it, I would definitely recommend it. I hope this helps you with your shopping. If so, let me and others know below and leave a comment with your questions. Regards Cass
