I've been using the 3M Precision mouse surface since the days when they had special edges for gripping mouse balls. The Precision finish looks sharp and offers very precise optical tracking. I can't talk about battery savings, but if you want a smooth gliding surface that maximizes the precision of your optical mice, then this is for you. An optical mouse of any brand and style will work well. I wish they would offer a sticky back/thin profile version, I really like the larger area mat but I also like the slim profile of the smaller sticky surfaces. Sometimes the edge of the foam pad rubs against the wrist.
