My mother was a real seamstress. Your shears and secateurs were probably in better shape than anything else. Since my mother's polishing scissors are getting a bit old, I bought two or three other polishing scissors to replace them. None of the others I've bought have ever been good. They were tough, difficult to cut, and didn't leave clear cuts. When I used one of my old pairs to trim excess fabric from the hem of my pants, I had so many problems with it that I ended up tearing off a good chunk of the pants. Grrr. It made it. I searched for the top rated rose shears here on Revain and bought them. Those were them. I just hemmed three shirts today using these scissors. What a joy! (I wish I could say the same about my new sewing machine, but that's another story.) These sewing scissors weren't stiff at all, they're a good size, and leave a nice clean cut even on the knits I've cut. . I would highly recommend these scissors. Great value for money. And the stitch ripper that came with the kit came in handy today too.
