It's a way to seamlessly download digital video to your Mac. In my case, the 4-pin end connects directly to my Panasonic digital handheld, and the 6-pin end connects to one of the Firewire ports on the back of my iMac. As soon as you turn on your camcorder, iMovie recognizes it and can immediately start controlling the camcorder (play, stop, rewind, etc.) and stream digital video to your iMac hard drive.
