One reviewer was right: You don't need the liners. But it makes it ten times easier to scoop the litter if you have them. I have not cleaned the boxes yet, so I don't know how difficult that would be. So far, my male cat has not peed on the wall behind the box, but he has come close (10 days). ModKat needs to make the litter box (XL) about 6 inches longer. A large cat (which I have) is barely able to turn around. In my opinion, that is why he pees standing straight up. I keep suggesting that to ModKat, but every time I send them an email, they send an advertisement. I guess they don't accept criticism.
