I have read many complaints of customers washing this comforter and it has deteriorated. You need to either dry clean it or put it in the dryer with a dryer sheet on low speed. The material is thin so yes it will tear at the seam so buy some thread and a needle and sew back. If you can't take care of this duvet, you need a sleeping bag. I love this blanket for the softness and the fact that it's warm.
