A great addition to any first aid kit if you're paranoid about chest injuries (I know, thanks to the media). Remember that if you don't have ANY of these in your kit, at least bring some trash bags and tape to bandage your chest wound. A collapsed lung will kill you long before you lose blood. If the vent works when you apply it, great. When it becomes clogged with blood and the patient finds it increasingly difficult to breathe, you need to remove it to deflate. If they start wheezing and can't breathe, you really need to stick your (hopefully gloved) finger in the puncture hole to try to get the air out before you put the bandage back on. Blood gushing out of the hole is GOOD. That means air is escaping.
