Review on Prima Marketing 963347 Mechanicals Embellishments by Amy Mcleod

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Beautifully aged and distressed details add a little fun to mixed artwork and other displays

I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful these little pocket watch cases turned out. On the product page they are labeled as "jewellery" and I guess I was expecting something extremely flimsy and cheap looking given that wording and the low price. nice troubled finish. To be clear, they are not designed to actually function as a good, working pocket watch. Instead, they are intended for artistic purposes - to be used in multimedia artworks, scrapbooking, dioramas, antique displays and so on. The square look is different from other pocket watch cases I've seen (and bought) at the craft market, such as Tim Holtz's large round one. I was wondering if Tim Holtz's metal dials would work with these Prima Marketing cases since some of these metal dials have the same vintage look. I have a package with them and I have tried them. None of them work with Prima Marketing's smallest pocket watch, and the only one that *can* work with larger pocket watches is just Tim Holtz's smallest dial. They are actually too small so you need to adjust them to something bigger or they will slip and fall out. The finish of this pocket watch is my favorite part. Considering the low price, I expected the worn and vintage look shown in the photos on the product page to look plasticky and different in real life than I received my 'bells and whistles'. But no. The ones I received look great. The "rust" finish is in the areas where you would expect rust and the areas where you would expect "heavily worn" is dark brushed metal. However, this rust is easy to scrape off. So if you're using it for an art project that involves constant contact with your pocket watch, I would suggest that you maybe give it a final protective coat to prevent rust scratches. However, be sure to use a "matte" finish if you want to maintain a dull vintage look. A few details about pocket watches. Unlike some competitors on the market, they don't have glass or plastic finishes (just an empty hole). The large clock is 1-3/4" square with a 1-1/4" round hole. Small 7/8" clock with *almost* 3/4" round hole. Both pocket watches have two small screws on the back that allow you to remove the back plate and place items and/or photos inside. (The round hole on the front panel also allows you access without removing the back panel, but removing the back panel also allows you to place metal or rigid parts that would otherwise not flex to fit the round hole. ) Unlike real pocket watches, the upper part (shackle and pendant) is completely stationary.
