Overall an improvement

I think you've read reviews complaining about the lack of image sharpness on some examples of this camera. I suggest reading the detailed review on dpreview.com which is a bit more impartial and objective than some of the negative reviews here. (This is natural. Someone who has spent money on a camera and is disappointed will react less objectively than a reviewer testing four sample cameras, comparing image quality and not spending money on any of them.) Personally, I'm pleased with that Lens of my sample S100 and I assume there were manufacturing issues with the first models that rolled off the assembly line. Being a pioneer always comes with a risk, especially when a model is launched in the holiday rush like it used to be. S95 owners will find enough differences in controls to bother the S100. However, after a process of relearning, I felt that the functional changes were improvements, particularly when I needed quick access to aperture/shutter speed, ISO, and exposure settings. I also appreciate brand new features like GPS and automatic dynamic range compression. And what I like most is the wide-angle lens. I'm not thrilled with the rougher metal body finish and finger rests, which appear to have been added to please users who complained that the S95 was too slippery. I liked the completely clean styling of the S95. For those who haven't touched the S95 (or its predecessors), you've got a gift: I think it's the most feature-packed pocket camera, apart from being one of the smallest. Nearly all of the features of my full-size D5 Mark II are reproduced here, and are fairly intuitive to access. Or you can of course just set it to Auto. But you don't need this camera for that, do you? The intended buyer, I think, is a fairly serious photographer who wants complete control of the features in a body small enough to take anywhere with minimal loss of image quality. Yes, the small physical size of the 12-megapixel sensor introduces additional noise compared to a full-frame camera and you may miss a lot of pixels at times, but nonetheless an incredible performance and very nicely executed.

Pros

Cons
  • Long wait
