The seller, Active Trade, delivered the unit on time and as described - 5 stars for that. The device itself (Garmin Foretrex Model 601) appears to be faulty, but I haven't spent enough time to confirm this status. He's having trouble staying in contact with the satellite even in clear skies, but that may be the result of living (and testing) in the suburbs. Once I've tested it in the wild I'll have a clearer opinion (and I'll update that opinion here in this review). The device is doing one thing that isn't described in the manual - it's showing a blinking question mark over my current location - so this needs to be addressed. I might be doing something wrong, but the fact that the device does this and isn't described in the manual (or apparently somewhere else on the internet) is worth at least one star less in this review. [UPDATE: Garmin answered this question for me - blinking "?" icon indicating insufficient satellite signal to verify location - for those like me who didn't know. They also confirmed that this information is NOT in the manual. Anyway, thanks to Garmin] Connecting the device to a PC (to download custom maps or use it as a storage device, as the manual recommends - 9 megabytes isn't much by today's standards, but enough for waypoint data) caused the device to lock up . I had to take out the batteries to start it again. However, my second attempt was successful. It's worth deducting half a star. Aside from these relatively minor things, the 601 performs as expected. Keep in mind that this is a navigation tool in the truest sense of the word: no color screen, no detailed road, street or area maps. Its strength lies in what I call relative navigation: it knows where it is and can easily calculate the path and distance to another location point, given that the (nearest) location point has been entered into memory 601 by the user became. On that note 601 - a great pre-planning tool, albeit archaic (old school). Technically, you could use this device to plan and travel the world, provided you either a) created a complex waypoint system and entered it into the device, or b) used it in conjunction with existing maps as a reference. [NOTE: Garmin has a free mapping app called "Basecamp" that connects to the 601 (a quick and easy way to download waypoints to your device's memory). One benefit (again, not mentioned in the user manual) is that when I connected my device to a PC through Basecamp, a firmware update was provided for my device] Compared to the sophistication of many GPS devices available today, this device isn't a map and should not be treated as such. It will always tell you where you are, but unless you have already told it where you are going (or wanting) there is no way for the user to get or output that information solely from the device itself. For example, if you leave camp on a pioneer trip, the device will always show you the way back to camp, as it (permanently) displays your line of movement - electronic breadcrumbs. By simply tracking your (electronic) steps, which the 601 has stored in its memory during your hike, you get a navigation path back to where you started. navigation aid. But that's just a help. It mounts on your wrist (or handlebars), runs on a couple of AA batteries, tells you exactly where you are (in terms of latitude and longitude), tracks your movement with some precision, and costs around $200 . It will NOT: speak; tell you where to turn; how is the traffic; or which route is the fastest route. But it will tell you altitude, distance and time to target, barometric pressure, sunrise, moonset, speed and much more (I guess 601 is a must if you jump out of flying planes a lot). - aerodynamic quality? Yes, that's right). In that sense, it's amazingly flexible and as accurate as any other GPS navigator. whether the screen protection of the device is required. My concern is that if the screen gets sufficiently scratched - a definite possibility in practical field use - it might not be possible to actually read the data on the screen. I hope this information helps keep you informed.
