Review on ⌚ Fanmis Ceramic Bezel PVD Case Black Dial Stainless Steel GMT Automatic Unisex Calendar Wrist Watch by Stephanie Garcia

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very good case and movement for the money but lousy strap

I have several watches from Omega to various Christopher Wards as well as a Sea-Gull from China. This watch is the cheapest of them all, so my rating is for a $128 watch. This is an attractive watch with a beautiful case. The overall quality of the case is quite good, the PVD coating is smooth and slightly shiny. There's a slightly odd peace sign (or Mercedes?) on the hour hand. The dial glows in the dark. At 40mm, the case isn't as gargantuan as many modern watches - it's a medium size that looks good on my medium to large wrist. I have some that are a bit bigger but look good. I wish they had done a better job with the back, either with a different crystal to show the automatic movement function, or with the standard screw-down case back with notches to accommodate the instrument. My guess is that this screw is threaded and has a few tiny slots for gripping the tool. So far - about a week - the watch is showing the time perfectly. I believe that the movement belongs to Chaika, and that's a good thing. A little-known fact is that the Chinese started copying Swiss automatic movements about 50 years ago, and they're pretty good at it. I'm not a fan of magnifying glasses over the date - like all external ones, it's cemented. The bezel rotates and looks solid. Despite the screw-down crown, they are rated at 3 atmospheres, which basically means they can be splashed with water, and no more. Don't shower with it and certainly don't swim with it. The weak link :) is the strap which is of very poor quality compared to the rest of the watch. The size is perfect for my wrist (I only removed one link), the clasp barely stretches. Putting the watch down is especially inconvenient if you have a small hand. And the edges of the strip are sharp! So I swap it out, which will cost about $50. I would happily pay another $20-$30 for a watch with a strap of the same quality as the case. But I like the suitcase so much that I will leave it and spend a few euros more. With a quality strap and for say $160 this would be a 5 star watch in this price range. For $128 with a strap that cannot be used long-term, I am downgrading it to 1.25 stars. So he gets a 3.75/5, which rounds up to a 4.0 for the title's score.

Pros
  • High quality stainless steel and premium alloy strap
Cons
  • Problems
