Review on πŸ“» Sangean PR-D19BU Portable Radio: FM Stereo/AM Digital Tuning, White/Blue, with Protective Bumper by Kara Collins

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Not bad for its size and price, but overall it's a compromise.

I'm no radio expert but I've been using it for a few weeks so thought I'd leave a review. I was torn between something truly portable and something that seemed to work great but weighed 5 pounds. That seemed like the happy medium, so I decided to give it a try. I bought this based on reviews of the same radio in mono which indicated it was near perfect on FM and very good on AM. I wanted a stereo version so I bought this. All in all I would probably buy it again. It's pretty good for its price, but far from perfect. Item: - About the size of a hardcover book and weighs about a pound making it easy to carry around. - It is very intuitive and easy to use. Short press the search button and it will skip to the next channel. Press and hold the channel button until you hear a beep to save the station. It stores 20 popular stations (10 AM and 10 FM, in 4 different preset memory groups). Stored stations are accessed using the buttons on the top of the radio. The speakers sound good, but they distort quite a bit at high volumes. The FM receiver is pretty good, but it fades in and out a bit and seems to drift a bit. Also, it doesn't come with an AC power adapter, which is to be expected at this price and size, but I've used it with batteries and the battery drain doesn't seem excessive - at least not yet. He uses 4AA. It has an aux input for something like an MP3 player. Not very good things. The worst thing about this radio is the headphone jack. It has very low volume and too much bass. It's almost impossible to use in headphones or external speakers. I'm not sure why Sangean launched a product with such an obvious flaw. Anyway, I didn't buy it to use with external speakers or headphones, but if so, don't buy this one. AM is fine. There are actually only 3 AM stations in the area and I can still receive all of them with an ancient pocket Sony and this radio isn't much better either. Overall I'm happy with this radio, but it's a compromise. If you're looking for something ultra-portable, this isn't quite it, but it's close. If you want something with really good specs and sound it's not that either, but not bad.
