Pads are needed to keep an incontinent cat's area clean. Goodnights stick to the floor and carpet very well, which means the cat (and we) can walk around without touching the pads all the time. The only problem may be that they stick TOO well to some surfaces, especially wood and linoleum. Some of the sticky part will remain when you remove the pad. But it's pretty easy to remove those sticky bits with a metal scraper and I haven't found anything better or more absorbent.
