Review on ๐Ÿ’พ Enhance Your PlayStation 4 Storage with Nyko Data Bank Plus Hard Drive Enclosure by Anne Miller

Do your research, you will be very satisfied!

**** UPDATE 5/11/16: As of the latest PS4 firmware update, "Suspend" mode now works with non-laptop/3.5" drives. My 4TB Hybrid SSD is now properly paused. Thank you Sony gods! ********** First off, let me say that you as a buyer should do your own research when adding hardware accessories that change the function of your PS4. Most of the reviews criticizing this device for not allowing a 5/6TB hard drive are not a limitation of this accessory, they are a limitation of the PS4. Will higher capacity drives work? Yes, but there's one exception to your PS4's features, which isn't steeped in those Nyko accessories, but in the PS4 OS itself. I believe Nyko could educate the consumer better in their box/manual but I believe the consumer should learn this before making any changes to their console. It's like someone breaking their iPhone in jail but unaware of the possible negative consequences because they didn't do any research beforehand. Essentially, this accessory allows you to use a standard 3.5-inch desktop hard drive. I'm currently using a 4TB Seagate SSHD internally. From my research, people who have upgraded to anything larger than 4TB have had issues (hibernation, power issues, rebooting) which again are not related to an accessory failure. You can meet people who claim that 5TB+ hard drives work, and they're not wrong. However, many (not all) have functional issues where load times are actually longer, access times to load while playing are longer, and other related issues. But that is NOT due to the Nyko database! This is an issue with the PS4 operating system that deals with large memory. Now for my actual review of this unit: The hardware - it comes with a screwdriver that allows you to remove the single screw required to replace the hard drive. The quality of the device itself is in no way inferior to the PS4 itself. It's plastic and looks the same as the PS4 stuff to me. The fit of the device is great; no hassle or hassle to insert and snap into anything. It snaps into place and fits like a glove. Functionality - It does what it says on the tin, it allows you to upgrade your PS4's internal storage to a larger capacity 3.5" desktop hard drive. I formatted the hard drive to exFAT FIRST (PS4 works very well with this format) and reinserted it securely into the Nyko expansion bay (make sure the connection is tight and secure, it shouldn't move at all). I am using a Seagate 4TB SSHD and after a PS4 firmware reinstall I downloaded the recovery data to this HDD and everything works as usual with the benefit of a larger capacity HDD. No hibernation problems, no reboot problems. My advice to EVERYONE who is hesitant to do so based on other reviews. 1.) Do your own research. Performance limitation caused by the PS4 OS, not the Nyko expansion bay) 3.) Format the new hard drive as exFAT with a PC first before inserting it into the Nyko4 device. ) Check ALL connections before launching the PS4 with newly installed hardware *** Any problems you may encounter are NOT related to this accessory1.) The PS4 OS currently does not work well with large memory. That's why Niko recommends 2 TB for now. I'm currently using a 4TB drive that I'm happy with. 2.) You WILL have problems with suspend mode when using higher capacity discs, but again this is NOT an issue caused by this Nyko device, it is a limitation of the current PS4 firmware. Sony needs to release an update to support standby/sleep with higher capacity discs. Until then, all you have to do for now is turn off your PS4 normally. If everything is fine with that, then there is no problem.

Pros
  • Same as always
Cons
  • Bothering me
