This replaced another one that finally died after 12+ years I think. a no-brainer, partly because they're easy to install if you have access, but it replaced another InSinkErator of the same size, etc. The old one was quiet, but this one was incredibly quiet to begin with. I was glad I didn't spend more for an even quieter price. The disadvantage is a new seal! The new ones are installed with a gasket that inserts into the top of the sink instead of being connected to the grinder and pushed under the sink neck. A positive point that lowers the noise level. That's why it's quieter than the one it replaced, which had the same "sound" level. The downside is that the gasket coming from the top makes the hole a bit smaller. I'm guessing 30% or more. This keeps the sound muffled. It also makes it so that you have to slide everything through that spacer and into the grinder. Gaskets are much more pliable, but that doesn't make it any easier to get "things" through that smaller hole. And yes, I replaced the padding with a 'different' style that should be better, but it isn't. and now "things" fall into the shredder as they should. **Although the smaller opening seems safer to put things in the shredder, you have to push them in, even small things, which is a bit annoying. I tend to try to "not" glue anything near a running chopper. Of course you can fill the shredder completely and then switch it on, but you know that often. What a hassle for quieter operation? However, the old "Ding" type gasket inserts are much easier/safer to put in, and the trade-off is that they're noisier than the newer, thinner $4 gaskets. The sound is about the same as the old one, which was a bit quieter, so we're happy either way. The only thing I would do differently is not to get bogged down in the various quieter models that are available for more money. I could use the same audio level converter (just under $$) and the audio would still be fine, worst case scenario no change from the old one which was also very quiet. Moral of the story: I'm glad I didn't go for the most expensive/quiet model just to do the same so it works properly and is IMO safer.
