Unless you are a professional electrician, the first thing you should learn is to use a larger gauge wire than the code requires (the lower the number), such as 12 gauge (carries more these days with less heat resistance) than its smaller 14 gauge brother... So if there's a question - use the larger 12 (vs 14 or 16) gauge instead of saving a few bucks on a lower gauge (higher number)... Also, read a little about the wattage requirements, amperage, and wiring codes - and find out what kind of load you'll be creating and if it will work with the circuit you're trying to connect... or just ask or hire a real one electrician ...
