The top has a zip closure but the sides and bottom do not. Because of the way the two-head zipper is positioned, I couldn't fit my 17" x 24" wool ironing pad into this 18" x 25" bag no matter how hard I tried to get it in. The dimensions given on the product are accurate. So if you don't put a sheet of paper in it, you'll need more than 1 inch in both directions. If the sides were pleated or a different zip/zip closure I might have easily incorporated this into the bag. Remember and expect that an inch in either direction is sufficient if the thickness is less than ½ inch. The overall quality of the bag was pretty good
