Nastran was not designed to account for thermal expansion of the cell material, so when you changed from one cell chemistry to another (e.g., lithium iron phosphate) it would fail. The problem was solved by creating an interface between the solver and the module that allowed the user to define custom equations for temperature changes inside each cell. This made it possible to model the behavior as well as predict how much capacity will be lost over time due to temperature change during normal operation or in case of failure.
