Not much actually as it's just a butter dish. The oil is put on the bottom of the product and you cover it with a lid. Remove the lid, use a knife, spoon, fork, fingers, whatever your little heart desires to take some of that stick (or chopsticks. 2) of butter and deliver it wherever your little heart desires it wishes! I have not and will not use a neat little knife attached to a butter dish. Why? Because it is made of wood and will eventually "deteriorate" after repeated washing. I think it looks great as an accessory to the whole "look but don't touch" ensemble. a gift for those who only use a saucer or other utensil "not a butter dish" for oil!
