Not sure if this is our shortcoming or if it is a standard for everyone. I was excited because I saw that it has both a beep and a vibration in addition to the shock function and thought I could adjust it to what works best for our dog. This was not the case. First off, the only setting you can adjust on this collar is the sensitivity with which it picks up sounds. Unfortunately, this is useless because no matter what you put up, it will pick up everything and can shock our dog even if he doesn't bark. He literally picked my husband up and I had a normal voice level conversation and he started shocking our dog. In addition, the shock function is very delayed. So if your dog is really barking, it won't actually shock him until he's done barking, as he'll go through the beep and vibrate mode first. It doesn't teach anything because it just confuses the dog. If the dog stops barking after the squeaking has started, it should stop too. In the first hour we had him with us he picked up our other dog's bark and started going through the beep, vibrate and shock settings but that didn't stop him, he kept going through the process though our dog had run into another room and was hiding under the bed, it still shocked her. She was crying in pain, which she then caused and continued to shock her until I was finally able to pull her out from under the bed and take her off. This thing is a torture device. I also tried it on myself and the shock function is very strong and after an hour I was in pain. I can expressly not recommend this bark collar.
