They were good primarily for ensuring that the zippers of gym bags and luggage do not break and the contents spill. Look it up on YouTube: there are so many ways for determined thieves to steal things and not even be spotted (a pen is used to unzip and then rezip the zip in the right position - only one way). I doubt that people are often brave enough to steal things from bags stacked in an airplane's overhead compartment, but if they do it will slow them down, at least for a moment.
