I could go on and on about the differences between my first "portable" computer, the Kaypro 4 (Google it) and the GPD Pocket 2, and yes the differences are no small of amazing! At first I was a bit disappointed. The "optical navigation device" did not work on the first device. While this didn't completely shut down the computer, it took away one of the great features of the GPD. I have ordered a replacement. Interestingly, the technical department at GPD sent detailed photos of the ribbon cable connecting their optical mouse and suggested that I diagnose the problem and fix it myself! I liked the idea that this is something I can successfully diagnose and repair with them. Too often manufacturers send us sealed boxes of their technology that we never "own" unless we're willing to forgo the protection their warranties offer. GPD's technical attitude seemed to be "Sure, do it!" BRAVO GPD! The replacement came quickly (THANK YOU LENVEE!) and works well, the mouse takes a little getting used to but makes a HUGE difference when navigating the screen. After reading other reviews I expected to hear a noisy fan. It's been quiet enough so far, I need to feel the ventilation to make sure it's actually working. (it is) The keyboard is large enough and well designed, feels comfortable. As with any new car, it takes some getting used to. The screen is bright and comfortable, but the touchscreen is a double-edged blessing. It can get a little messy when used as a "tablet". The hinge is tight and requires a little force to open, but I didn't find it a problem. I find this device too small to fit in my lap alone, my main concern is to cover the vents. I usually place mine on the clipboard when it's on my lap to keep it ventilated. The general build quality looks great! This computer appears to be very well made. Now we come to the operating system. Okay, this is a Windough$ based machine. As you might have guessed, I'm not a huge fan of this particular operating system. I need a Windough$ based computer for a specific purpose once this task is complete? I will most likely install Linux OS on my GPD Pocket 2. In summary, Revain customer support was extremely helpful in handling the return. GPD's attitude towards end users digging into their devices is outrageous. That tells me I actually "own" this technology! What do you get for that? Yes. Maybe a bit expensive. But it's so cute! (And capable!)
