Review on High-Quality Shure AONIC 5 Wired Sound Isolating Earbuds by Tony Hoover

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A story about two connections.

First of all, these in-ear headphones are spectacular. So much so, that after 30 minutes of listening, I went to the Shure website to get true wireless adapters. Well I never expected the wireless performance to match the wired but I found this set to be so superior to any other pair of headphones I have (and I have a box full of them: wired, wireless, true wireless) and really competitive with more than the in-ear headphones I prefer, including the Shure Aonic50 wireless headphones that I used for direct comparison. I figured that at worst I could expect comparable performance to the Aonic50 in Bluetooth mode. I was wrong. While the pure sound quality remains superb and is a notch or two higher than other wireless headphones I've owned or tried, the degradation in sound quality compared to a wired connection is so dramatic that you feel like you've pulled the bait and to have turned it on. yourself, because you will not be able to forget how impressively they were connected. If all you need is a true wireless connection, do yourself a favor and buy an adapter right now and don't listen to them at all. However, they are so effective and clear that I keep them in a true wireless setup because they are good enough that I can compromise. But enough of my deflated balloon, this review should be about wired headphones, and for that matter they should be compared to in-ear or in-ear headphones. You are so good. I wouldn't call myself an audiophile, but I'm a very picky listener. At the moment I prefer the Shure Aonic50 and Dali-IO6 kits. Should I ever find myself on a plane again, I wanted to continue my love-hate relationship with Bose and Sony, as I haven't found any alternatives with comparable ANC capabilities that would allow me to isolate myself from the outside world as well as these two manufacturers. So far this set has noise isolation rather than noise cancellation. Since I don't have sensitive ears, I went with the triple flange tips. Packed so close to my eardrums that I have to chew gum to adjust to the elevation changes when I stand up to stretch. There are several other top-of-the-line options in the package, including the Comply earbuds, which many headphone wearers admire. As I can gather from my regret at switching to true wireless, this set uses the MMCX connection method so the cable and platform options are huge once you take a leap of faith to ditch the connectors from these expensive buds. When you do this, you can also swap out the tips to change the sound signature for a brighter response or more bass emphasis. Personally, I am completely satisfied with the standard neutral behavior in all frequency ranges. The incorporation of a balanced armature triple driver makes me doubt that I will ever find an adequate alternative to the dynamic driver again. While I know there will be listeners who will feel that the Aonic5 performs worse in the low end than sets that are specifically tuned for low frequencies, this set is aimed at listeners who want clarity and clarity at all frequencies . However, I've been trying new headphones with the same songs for more years than I care to mention, adding new tracks from time to time, but I've never heard the beginning of Kalpaldi's conga fade in Low Spark. Guys in heels are as early as I am with this set. And despite my attempts to break them up with a few whistlers (Minnie Riperton, Rachelle Farrell, Audra McDonald, etc.), I couldn't detect a hint of distortion in any of the upper ranges, regardless of the volume setting. The sound stage perception is excellent with this set, and the instrumental separation is so clear that you feel like you're sitting at a front row table in a cozy club environment. Low frequencies are not overproduced, but crisp, clean and natural. At its core, the Aonic5s is a pair of headphones that will keep you hooked on the next best move for years.

Pros
  • SPACIOUS, GREAT SOUND + CLEAR, NATURAL BASS thanks to three high-resolution balanced armature drivers; Two dedicated woofers and a separate tweeter reproduce enhanced highs and warm mids with clear, natural bass; Developed over decades to our own exacting standards, these headphones deliver true cinema sound.
