Review on MXL 770 Cardioid Condenser Microphone by Nicholas Reggae

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It can't be that the price is right.

I'm confused here. Why is this microphone so low priced but fantastic quality? This is the most literal plug and play microphone. I am a musician who has recorded with the U87 and the best blue mics and the list goes on. I was disappointed in the studio with the way my vocals sounded. Not enough air, not enough bass, not rich enough, not powerful enough. The list goes on. I spent less than 5 minutes getting the mic through the entire mix and picking up the bass in my voice without booming. I feel like I'm cheating with this mic. I'm honestly trying to find something wrong with it and can't. I would fit in the audiophile group and in many cases the price doesn't always match the sound quality. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet. This mic is a great mic. I've seen a lot of feedback from non-musicians using this mic and I hope to allay the fears of people saying they need a Neumann to sound good. It just isn't the case. I would suggest using a great interface and preamp and ADA and whatnot. But when it comes to the professional aspect of this microphone, there's no compromise between quality and price. What bothered me the most was the frequency response graph with a lot of high frequencies. you don't hear It just adds air to the vocals. I probably wouldn't use it for cymbal overheads, but I only focus on vocals. I've heard many mxl mics have big problems with Sybelence. This is not surprising. I wish I had seen more professional reviews of this mic. PLUS not that it matters at all. But it looks beautiful. Gold and black are stylish and don't look cheap.
