Review on πŸ§₯ Amazon Essentials Women's Rain Jacket with Waterproof Protection by Gage Lawson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The hood isn't very deep but the coat holds up well in the rain

The outer material feels like a polyester shell (which it is) and the inner lining is very soft, smooth rubberized texture. It looks like it's actually waterproof. I'm 5ft 6in, 160lbs, smaller chest and I ordered a large. There's room for a sweatshirt underneath and the sizing seems pretty good. Two things I don't like: The zipper goes almost to the bottom lip and is quite stiff so you can either omit the hood or leave 4 inches open or zip it all the way up, use the hood and figure out how to tape your face out . If you close it almost to the end, it stands straight up, so it's entirely possible to close it. The hood is not deep enough. When I wear a ponytail, the hood doesn't cover the front of my hair by an inch. I removed my ponytail and replaced it with a braid. Then the hood barely covers my face. I'm covered, but just barely. It feels like the hood is slipping back and I'm never fully protected from rain on my face. Considering how serious the zipper and top of the coat are, I expected the hood to be bigger and better. The real test: is it waterproof? I wore this coat to clean a chicken coop in the rain (Portland, Oregon). Moderate continuous rain but NOT torrential / heavy / blizzard. I wore the front zipper open about 4 inches (behind the collarbone but not to the neck) and the hood was down. Within an hour, it became very humid inside and I could feel my body heat being trapped inside, helping me warm up. After 2 hours I realized I was getting a little wet in some places but I wasn't cold. After 3 hours the shell on my arms, shoulders and front was getting darker as if it was starting to absorb water instead of repelling it. I finished my work and took off my jacket. My top shirt underneath was wet on my back, shoulders and chest. The shirt underneath was dry. I wasn't soaked to the skin, but I wasn't dry either. I could have been drier if I'd zipped further (but couldn't work with a zip on my mouth) and used a hood. So I would say he did a great job here. What I don't like so much is the fit of the hood. I'll rarely go 3 hours without a hood in the rain like I did during testing, so that was acceptable. I usually want a raincoat for walks (up to an hour) and that will do.

Pros
  • Useful for more than it's intended purpose
Cons
  • Something's wrong
