This is a black synthetic leather material and if you touch it with grease or oil on your hands (e.g. after preparing dinner) it will leave a stain. However, I like the shape and it serves its purpose as the main chair that we use during lunch. The seats are very hard, no padding. Despite this, they are spacious and comfortable enough to eat there for around 25 minutes. And one more thing - the legs are not metal, but some kind of painted material that does not reach gold. It's more of a golden brown. It has a modern look and a little more style than your typical barrel back chair. My feet leave footprints on my light floor, so I have to come up with something. I hate those little felt pads that stick because they never stick for a while. Another choice of material could be some sort of fabric like velvet, and I just didn't want to be that formal. In general, if I were to rebuild, I would buy something of higher quality.
