OtterBox Defender Pro cases vary in mileage

Looks like a really good docking station. It's beautiful and durable, and it's not complicated to set up. Plug in and go. Having said that, I ended up sending mine back. TL; DR: If your phone is empty or in a light to medium case, you'll probably be very happy with this dock. However, if you're using a heavy/durable case, roll the dice with that one. Long version: At my house we have an iPhone 12 with an OtterBox Defender Pro case and a Note 20, also with an OtterBox. CaseDefender Pro. We bought the phones and cases a day apart from my local Verizon store a few weeks ago, so don't worry about counterfeits or weird aging issues. The problem is that the Defender Pro case runs _really_ close to the 3mm limit that this charger is designed for. Close enough for normal production variations to come into play. My Note 20 charges super with it. My husband's iPhone stops charging after a few seconds or a few minutes and the light on the charger starts blinking. Note was normally charged up to 100% on a flat pillow. He didn't register on the corner page at all. The iPhone charged briefly at both charging points, then the LED flashed. We know the phones were properly centered because the case has small gray ribs on the sides in the middle, and we were able to use these ribs to align the phone with the charging point. At this point we had options: switch to a thinner iPhone case, or bring back the dock and find a case that's rated for 5mm thick cases. We decided to leave the heavy suitcase behind and look for another docking station.

Pros
  • Pleasing
Cons
  • Mostly good, but...
