Review on Enhance Your Photography with Sony VCLECF1 Fisheye Conversion Lens (Black) by Matt Eason

Absolutely Cool: Camera Lenses

I'm considering the VCL-ECU1 Ultra Wide Converter, which converts a 16mm NEX lens to a 12mm lens (35mm equivalent - 18mm) with a field of view of around 100° and also the VLC-ECF1 fisheye converter which gives the 16mm lens an effective focal length of 10mm for a full 180° field of view. In the past I avoided teleconverters and wide converters, believing that they would inevitably degrade the quality of the base. Lens. A set consisting of a simple Sony 16mm lens and two converters, which can be viewed as a three-part modular system, shows that this does not necessarily have to be the case. These three devices together are an absolutely brilliant combination that will bring great joy to any NEX photographer. For some reason, Sony has an inferiority complex when it comes to camera optics. They used the Zeiss brand name on some lenses to increase recognition. However, the truth is that Sony has some extremely talented lens designers. They should be proud of this wide angle set but for some reason they didn't make it clear to the customers. After use, it becomes clear that all three parts have been designed as a unit. The mechanical connection is precise and reliable. The ultra wide converter works great and gives great results without requiring any special focus or exposure adjustments on my NEX 5n. Is the optical quality as good as the Zeiss Distagon 18mm wide angle lens? I don't know and I don't care since the Zeiss price is $1400 which is 4 times the total cost of the 3 components. My photos suggest that the base 16mm ultra-wide lens was designed as the primary optic, as the base 16mm lens itself isn't that outstanding - the combo pair is actually sharper. The fisheye combo is also super fun and the results are top notch, but of course fisheye is an acquired taste and you have to be willing to love the inevitable distortion rather than fret about it. Fisheye isn't for everyone, but creative photographers will love it. I recently used mine in combination with NEX HDR mode and got very amazing results. I'm so glad I discovered this set that Sony is offering at a very reasonable overall price. Highly recommended and another good reason to make the Sony NEX your camera of choice.
