The only way to pay extra for this thermostat is to buy it directly from Toyota. At this price point, there's absolutely no reason to skip a pad. The $4.50 thermostat from your local parts store comes with a gasket. I didn't put this thermostat in a pot of water with its competitors to test the opening temp, but it definitely looks like a $4.50 thermostat (which I had to buy to get the damn gasket). If you're coming to the conclusion that I'm a little unhappy that I had to go into town to buy a seal, then you've definitely followed the plot. It's a 30 cent part, it has to be changed with the thermostat, why so cheap when you're charging that much?
