I bought this product because I have a large thick (brown to black) beard but like most people the area around my mouth where the beard meets my lips is a little thinner than I wanted, so instead of using my boyfriend's brow pencil, i decided to buy it and keep it as an arsenal in my office for those times i want to look funnier if you get my meaning. I've found that of course you want to draw your beard horizontally, but that's for drawing the beard, it's just to get those little problem areas where it grows a little sparsely. Short vertical strokes to mimic the hair pattern I found makes it the most realistic and blends in with the rest of your beard for a polished look. Thumbs up. oh, and it has a built in pencil sharpener in the lid.
