First off, let me say I'm new to all this, just a few weeks ago with DX with emphysema and a flow rate of 4. The cannula is driving me nuts. My nose is running, stuffy and I always seem to blow my nose. I always forgot to breathe through my nose, not my mouth. I was used to mouth breathing at the time because of my previous exertional dyspnea. The face mask seemed intriguing and I ordered 3 different ones. The first two came quickly. What I prefer is the Ausilium mask, the one with the green bands. This is a thick rubber-plastic mask with a metal nose piece that can be adjusted to fit snugly against the face. It has vents and I covered the vents thinking I should increase the oxygen concentration but it didn't work. rzunimag. With every breath he sucked on the mask. What was surprising was that the oxygen levels were fantastic, usually 98-99 and sometimes even 100 on my oximeter. The warmth of my skin and breath allowed the mask to conform more closely to my face, but it never achieved an airtight seal. . But I found you really don't want it to be airtight. So there is a leak above (between the eyebrows) and below the chin. Nothing uncomfortable. But remember, I have a bitrate of 4 and I have no idea how the mask will behave at a higher and stronger bitrate. I'm still amazed at how easy it is to maintain those high oxygen levels even with a leak. But think about it. Oxygen is trapped/concentrated by the mask and when you breathe in through your nose or mouth it all gets into your lungs with little leakage/loss compared to a nasal cannula which delivers oxygen to your nose through these two small holes. And that would be true no matter the mask. You must "plan in" for water and meal breaks. Also make phone calls. I was watching the last 30 minutes of Top Gun and felt really close to these masked guys. even my voice. Very funny. I never noticed how much and how often I drink water or tea. The elastic won't last long because you often take off and put on a mask. I tied a knot on one side and left the other side open so I could tie it from time to time. I sew, and I'm pretty sure I have a spare elastic here. It must be thin and strong. I noticed that you can buy elastic laces for cheap, which should be fine if I need to replace an existing elastic.
