This is normal. They do what they say, but the mechanics are a bit poorly worked out. You use your toothbrush to press a lever that dispenses toothpaste onto it. But when you pull the toothbrush back, it's no longer under the toothpaste spray, so some of it gets into the mechanism. It would be better if it had some kind of one-time action when it releases a certain amount no matter how long you press. You can then hold the brush in place until it's fully extruded. I bought this for my 6 year old because toothpaste was all over the bathroom when she was in charge of squeezing. The device solved this problem, so overall I'm satisfied. It looks really messy inside, especially since we both use blue toothpaste!
