Review on πŸ“» Randy FCC Handheld or Mobile CB Radio with Weather Channel, Alerts, and Enhanced Searchability by Gustavo Mathew

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Could this be the best portable CB radio?

Possibly the coolest portable CB radio I have ever seen. So far the reception has been very good. Some of the features are rarely, if ever, seen on portable CB radios. The radio itself feels very solid and the layout is very intuitive (especially if you're familiar with other President radios). In fact, it doesn't even look like a portable CB radio, more like a GMRS radio on steroids. Unfortunately, this review needs a little background: I have many CB radios and devices. Mainly Cobras and other "older fashioned" radios. Unfortunately, all of these radios are large and don't easily fit in one of my modern cars. Then I stumbled across President Bill and fell in love with the allure of this radio. I ended up getting a bigger car that had a little more room and switched to a McKinley President. McKinley is possibly the largest mobile CB radio ever made, perhaps even the largest CB period. Needless to say, as soon as I found out the President was releasing a wearable CB, I bought it almost immediately. The President Randy is only slightly lighter than my other handhelds, but feels a little more robust. It doesn't use 8 AA batteries like the others. It has an amazing screen that is so easy to see unlike others. If you want to know more about the features read the product description but this thing has ANL/NB/HiCut, DW, VOX, WX, WX Alert, Roger Beep, ASC, SCAN channels! Even a flashlight! I usually find the flashlight on the radio pretty stupid, but this one seems really cool and has 4 different settings. The antenna is very flexible for a rubber duck. I wouldn't bend it too much and I certainly wouldn't try to bend it in half! It allowed me to record a fairly clear conversation around my house, where other older portable devices couldn't record it as clearly. Even though the old PDA's battery could die, Randy was only half charged. Now here are a few things that made me lower the rating to 4 instead of 5:1. The biggest problem is the price. I find it a bit too high and I'm a radio geek. However, when you consider all the features of this radio compared to other portable devices available, the price is somewhat justified. It's also without a doubt the best new portable CB radio, and the best always comes at a price. Belt buckle. I personally don't like swinging belt clips like on this radio. They're too bulky and swing too much. It might be a little better than the almost impossible use of the thin, dense metal belt clip found on older handhelds, but why not just use a clip similar to the one used on dual-band portable ham radios? You had to use this type of belt clip because you can use the Randy as a portable radio and it has a metal ring on the back for a microphone holder. So I understand I'm just a little disappointed.3. The antenna is not a bayonet mount. Again this was because it could be used as a cellular device and that was for the antenna adapter. Again, this is just a preference.4. The latter doesn't bother me, but it might bother some people. Randy may have the best button and feature placement in the President line, but it still suffers a bit from the President layout. If you're not used to the President layout, you need to learn it. Once you do, you will fall in love with this amazing radio maker. It just happens because with so many functions and so few buttons, the buttons have to do multiple things. Again, this is probably the easiest, except maybe Bill. With all that being said, please don't pay too much attention to my silly little sophistry. This really is one of the best portable CB radios on the market. I would buy it again in a heartbeat and most likely will. It's always good to have more than one radio! I just hope the President comes up with a few more surprises like this one. I've heard the President has no plans for this, but I'd really like a Presidential Base Station!

Pros
  • Portable CB radios
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
