Review on πŸ’“ Polar FT7 Heart Rate Monitor with Power Systems, Exercise Training Watch in Black/Silver (92018) by Crystal Collins

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Why has Polar stopped releasing this amazing and affordable HRM for swimmers and triathletes?

First, my online research shows that Polar is currently the only company that makes heart rate monitors that use the signal from the chest strap at a low radio frequency (RF) rate of 5000 cycles per second (i.e. at 5kHz ). When swimming, only these low frequencies can penetrate the water, which is why I believe Polar devices are the only real-time swimming HRMs with accurate chest ECG sensors. My Polar FT7 has been very accurate and reliable all year round, sailing several miles a week. I know this because I often stop at the end of a lap to check my pulse by putting my fingers on my neck and I've never noticed a discrepancy. Other brands either offer blue tooth/ANT frequency chest straps or use laser optics on the wrist. Bluetooth and ANT use very high radio frequency transmission that doesn't go through water (hence they store data so you can see it after you get out), and even major manufacturers have optical (laser) wrist-based HRMs that reportedly don't do recommend them as exactly for swimming. I need to know in real time if I'm trying my heart too hard while swimming, and with my FT7 I can (and do) check every 50m while pushing off the wall. I'm a guy but I train in a form fitting leotard over a chest strap to keep it in place and fit me. . So here is the REAL impressive and amazing story that just happened to my FT7. After a year I had to replace the wrist unit battery and for some reason I couldn't screw the battery cover on properly. Later yesterday I had to dive in the bay and as a result the wrist unit was completely inundated with salt water. I immediately rinsed it in the sink and dried it with warm air from a hair dryer and then left it overnight. The next morning (i.e. today) it works with all functions, including the pulse, like new! Wonderful! A. So the Polar website currently offers the V-800, which I believe has excellent swimming abilities like the FT7 (and other previous Polar 5kHz HRM models) but is offered for "serious sports enthusiasts and professional athletes". with many great additional functions, I'm sure. but at a price of $499. Come polar. They've given up on making a great line of affordable buoyant products that no other manufacturer is touching.

Pros
  • Heart Touch function with no buttons
Cons
  • unreliable
