I just bought an apartment wired for surround sound and all I needed was a subwoofer. I don't have a lot of space so I liked the size of this device. It does the job - movies and video games definitely sound richer, and I do notice a difference turning it off just to see if it works. If you want to play music with lots of bass, this isn't too impressive. However, it does an excellent job of dealing with ambient noise. It may not fill a room, but if it's just part of your home theater, it does the job. I love its size and it fits well behind my 55 inch TV. It just won't excite you.
