My husband and I bought these shoes to wear over our boots when we recently drove to Upper Michigan in the dead of winter. Our activities included snowmobile racing and hiking to the ice cliffs on Lake Superior. We put them on in the parking lot to walk down Main Street, which was snow covered with almost pure ice. Then we climbed a steep hill through heavy frozen snow to icy cliffs. There were no problems here either. The spikes cut through ice and snow and provided stability at every turn. A few things to note: One of my boots slipped off my boot and my husband had to pull it back up. Happened a few times even though they were the size of my boot. When he ordered his he ordered the size according to the chart and his was right on the border so he ordered that size and when it arrived it was too small and he had to send it back and order a larger size. So the moral is, when you're at the limit of one size, move on to the next size. This is a great deal and we were impressed and so glad we had them. Without them we could not have carried out these activities. UPDATE: I forgot to mention in my original review that the straps over the boots are indeed pretty useless, but apparently that's what a lot of buyers thought. What I noticed about my pair was that one of the straps was much shorter than the other and couldn't even be fastened due to the length. Also, they are a bit difficult to understand HOW to attach them. Actually I had to change the one I was using to make it work.
