This mattress topper is just what I need. It feels soft, like baby clothes, and feels thin at first. I poured my cup of water over him after placing it on my new foam mattress and saw that half of the water remained unsoaked on the comforter. The other half of the water was absorbed by the lid. I wiped away most of the water with paper towels and tried to push the water onto the mattress but then removed the covers to touch the mattress. My mattress was almost dry :) You feel that the hydrophobic plastic side of the tread is adjacent to the mattress and the quilted soft thin part is adjacent to the body. I will not put this protector in the washer or dryer because I don't want to destroy its hydrophobic finish. I just put it on top of my new mattress and then put a clean sheet over it, along with all of my other clean linens.
