This is AWESOME! I adopted a Maine Coon kitten from a shelter (maybe a crossbreed, but mostly with Maine Coon traits). He was very lethargic and skin and bones. Out of concern for him, I took him to the vet two days later. At 10 weeks old, he weighed only 0.8 pounds, was not eating, not interacting, and appeared to be in another world - very disoriented and lethargic. and seemed to have trouble breathing. After $265 the vet told me he was fine and this behavior varies by breed. Then she hands me a jar of food that she says he dug up right in the office. I knew this was not true and is in no way "breed specific" behavior. His behavior at home has not changed. So I did my own research and found this to be a problem for many people who have kittens from a shelter. And I bought this thing, a milk replacer and some high calorie nutritional gel. I started giving him a spoonful of milk with two spoonfuls of warm water (I made him try to lick as much as possible and I used a syringe to feed him more) and then applied some nourishing gel to his skin. the tip of my index finger with half a scoop of lysine powder on it. I opened his mouth and placed it directly on his tongue. That thing's pretty sticky so it doesn't come out of his mouth, and I can make sure he's got the lysine. In terms of dosage, the package says one scoop per day for maintenance, and I've read that people have used up to two scoops. Over the shovel did well for my little guy. Btw they pee on him so I would give him separate portions) And here he is a brand new kitty! I just weighed it and it weighs 2.1 pounds. That's still underweight for his age, but he's steadily gaining weight! And now he not only eats himself, but also cries for his food! He is very playful and interactive and no longer sleeps constantly. I'm grateful to the people who shared their experiences, otherwise he probably wouldn't have made it! *** Please note that I am not a veterinarian and found my method through research. While this may or may not work for someone else, I wanted to share my experience and the method I used.***
