Plastic breaks easily
Only used a few times in the last 18 months. Plastic except it just crumbled/broke with less than a few pounds of force. I literally just pulled them out of the center console - no pulling. I suppose the same would happen if a kid tried to fold them a few times. It seems obvious that the plastic isn't strong enough to withstand the stress of just a flat hinge. It's just bad technique.
