Review on πŸ”Œ 2ft Short USB C Extension Cable - RIITOP USB-C Male to Female Braided Cable for Nintendo Switch and MacBook Pro by Dwayne Pore

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It works. Like, like, something like. Not reversible.

In the foreword to my test report, I would like to say that there is no USB-C standard for extension cables. This cable simply implements the USB-C cable standard, with one end being a female connector instead of two male connectors. That's bad because the USB-C cable itself isn't reversible. The implementation of the device makes it reversible. USB-C cables are not required to implement USB 2.0 on both sides and a full set of sideband signals. The correct extension cable should route the USB and sideband signals both up and down (no additional cables needed) for reverse operation. This cable does not reflect these signals either up or down, so it is not reversible. You just need to understand that connecting a cable with signals to the top pins to an extension cable with signals to the bottom pins breaks the connection. Due to the short length of this cable, it is quite capable of reliably transferring USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gbps). I used an external NVMe SSD for a 10Gb/s USB enclosure and there were no issues or data corruption during stress testing of the drive. However, it has the same cable design issues that make it unusable with Thunderbolt 3. Some TB3 devices may function, some may not function reliably (shutdowns), and some may not activate at all. I only tested the eGPU with the extension and gender changer and could not turn on the eGPU regardless of cable orientation. I've tried every combination, including swapping the cable ends between the computer and the eGPU case. I plan to use this with an external SSD so those cables will do what I need. however, it may not be suitable for all applications. YMMV
