I wanted an animal safari camera. I'm a beginner photographer so I was looking for a light camera, simple, very easy to use and with an excellent zoom. I wasn't ready to switch to a DSLR just yet and this Panasonic seemed like a great compromise; I bought it based on other reviews. The camera far exceeded my expectations. It is very easy to use and the photo quality is excellent. I was able to get incredible close-up shots (the camera has 12x optical zoom plus digital zoom so you can take pictures at 48x zoom). Image stabilization works great. As a beginner, I was very happy with the intuitive and easy-to-use camera and the variety of functions it offers. With a very small investment of time (5-10 minutes to get to know the camera) you can take great photos. I quickly found the easy mode too easy and preferred the photo mode, which has autofocus but allows for a lot more zoom and other options. The playback functions are also excellent. You can view up to 9 images at a time, there is a multiple delete and delete all images feature, and you can zoom in on images to focus on a specific area and/or make sure you get the right shot. Battery life is also excellent. I took about 800 photos a day, and I also reviewed and deleted images, and a battery charge lasted more than a full day. At night I copied the contents of the SD card to Wolverine and then deleted all the photos. With two batteries and two SD cards, I could go 4-5 days without power and charging. nice choice. I was also impressed that it withstood very difficult travel conditions - very, very rough roads, dust, heat, humidity, etc. It never crashed. It comes with a lens hood to help in bright light, and for around $30 you can buy a clear screen protector as an accessory (which I recommend if you're going to a dusty place and plan to take a lot of photos). Another benefit: you don't need a converter to charge your battery internationally, just an adapter for the country you're traveling to. It was designed to work with tensions both in the US and abroad.
