LensCoat's line of lens caps will elicit a 'love' or 'hate' reaction from most photographers. me incl. LensCoat offers these protective cases in a variety of colors and patterns, but the standard black cases are the only ones I even wanted to buy. These cases don't guarantee your lens will survive if you drop it onto concrete from a chest height, but they do offer "something" extra protection; mainly from scratches or a fall from a low height (e.g. removing a lens from a camera bag lying on the ground). Another small advantage of LensCoat is that there is a "slight" muting effect on the lens. In other words, if your lens suffers from a noisy autofocus motor, wrapping your lens in LensCoat will make it a little quieter. The difference is small, but a few decibels is still a few decibels. The LensCoat for Nikon 50mm f.1.8D is actually a two-piece lens cap, although it is relatively small, allowing part of the cap to fit over the lens. Main body of the lens, and the other part of the cover is put on the focus ring. Interestingly, this LensCoat for Nikon 50mm 1.8D also fits the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens. However, when using this cap on a Canon lens, it covers the AF/MF switch, so you cannot easily switch between manual focus and autofocus.
