Just received today. Initial observations: Love the compact but sturdy design.VERY bright! The D-Cells give it enough weight to be stable and not easy to turn over. Yes, there are some confusing instructions as to how to insert the batteries but you can figure it out easily in a few seconds. The flashing (4-second interval), low-brightness green LED on the side is a great feature to help you locate the lantern when you're standing in the dark during a power outage. It will certainly NOT keep you awake at night even if it's close to you or on a shelf facing you. The instructions clearly state that the green LED does NOT affect battery life. Personally, I would not even think of reboxing the lantern then trying to insert batteries in the dark when you need it quickly…that might be a challenge indeed. Having it ready-to-use is what being prepared is all about. For much of my emergency-related gear, I put a repetitive note on my Google calendar to remind myself to check the batteries once a month. A simple task that helps to ensure that the device is working and the batteries are good.I think this will be a great lantern for use at our home and our mountain cabin. Everything seems harder or more worrisome in the dark. This lantern will help with that.
