leaving jar open. 2.5 pounds. fills it all the way to the top, which means you can't use an inner "two-way valve cover" that defeats the entire purpose of the canister, or even an outer cover. I stopped watering my 2.5 pounds. not all the way up and even then had to scoop out quite a bit to fit the inner valve cover. I found that the inner lid still wasn't lowered enough to use the outer lid, so I had to open it again and take out more beans to clean. The canister would probably be perfect for 2 pounds. Beans and they should advertise it as such as it is about "working ability". I solved the problem by buying another of their overflowing cans of beans and then refilling the small can from this big one.
