The case was quite difficult to put on, which isn't too bad because at least it fits snugly and the iPad doesn't fall out at all. , you must remove it to fit the iPad in the case. The only way I could detach the black plastic part was to break it up and take it out. The black plastic element looks like it's in the case and should stay, but believe me it needs to be removed and the only reason I was able to find the black insert in the case was to maintain the shape of the case during shipping .
