When my cable company upgraded their cable boxes, the new ones didn't have the line outs I used to use for my self-powered speakers in my basement gym. I was forced to use the TV's digital optical output. Since the speakers didn't have optical inputs, I had to use a 3.18mm optical-to-analog converter. Unfortunately, it turned out that there was a large drop in performance due to the converter. I had to crank the speakers all the way up to get enough volume. I came across this article that claims to offer 20dB of gain. I inserted it between the transducer and the speakers, which was easy given the inputs and outputs available on this unit. Now I have enough volume with this setting. The amp seemed a bit pricey, but I've learned from previous electronic purchases that you often get what you pay for. This device appears to be made to high quality standards and works well.
