I'm still learning the functions.

Full disclosure. Please consider my ignorance as you read the following points, even though they may seem premature in some cases. Generally so far so good. Things I noticed about the gate: 1. It's smaller than you think. Really small. At first you think it's low quality because the size matters blah blah blah. But then you start to fall in love with the fact that it literally fits in the pocket of your jean watch. And for guys like me who don't always wear a suit, it's really handy. A little more and it will compete with six other items vying for space in my main daily bag inventory. So in this case, size matters, and the smaller the better. There is hope for all of you! And yes, if you secretly want to go and record someone, this recorder is for it if that's your thing.2. The sound quality is there. I will tell myself. The sound quality of my iPhone's voice memos is much better. But to be honest I haven't played with the quality settings. It may be common knowledge, but I've found that the closer you hold the recorder to your mouth, the worse the sound quality. I tested it and put it in my pocket and it gave the best sound reproduction. I believe it filters out more background noise. But until I play around with the settings I won't know for sure if the sound quality of this radio is any good. I don't have any recording devices other than my cell phone. But as it's convenient - I needed something when ideas start to flow as I run or poke around and stop writing them all down - an incredible pain in the back - the size trumps the sound quality. Hey, he's taking notes. I can understand the entry. If there's a lot of BG noise, so what. I'm not editing the song for the album. I've put the noise in my head into a simple format that I can come back to later. The instructions are simple, except for a few places where they use the terms that confuse me, and they obviously assume you know what they're talking about. None of my friends knew. If a google search solves this problem I will edit the review.4. Apparently, it has password protection that you can use to keep it safe from prying ears. I heard about it in a YouTube video review but it wasn't actually shown. The booklet is somewhere, I can't reach it right now, so I can't confirm it now. But if that's true, I understand that this is unique among recorders in the $40 range. So that's a definite plus.5. As far as I know, you can't just press record and start speaking when the device is off. You have to turn it on first. I do not want it. Perhaps you need to quickly take and write. The button is hard enough to press that it'll never start recording in your pocket, so it's odd why this feature is missing. Overall I like this voice recorder. I'll edit this review if I find I can improve the sound quality / get rid of some of the background noise. Hope this helps some of you on the fence.
