They have a good tight seal. The seal is so tight that when I accidentally removed the lid, several robin eggs flew out. Looks like glass, but it's not. If one of my dogs or cats throws it off the coffee table I don't think it will crack. Some might not like the tighter seal, but I like it because I know my only dog can't get in this jar. This is the same dog that can take the lid off Tupperware containers or open a container. It's nice to display your Easter sweets etc on a low coffee table without worrying about them getting into the chocolate. At Christmas he opened the can and ate all the homemade peanut crumbs that a friend gave me. He doesn't get into these jars and doesn't even try because his "dog" nose can't smell through a reliable, fresh seal on the lid. If you want a simple, unstable lid, this jar is NOT for you. This is a glass that is more shatterproof but looks like glass. Its appearance is attractive and its transparency shows the content very well.
